Lent is one of the oldest Christian practices, dating back to the first-century church. However, Lent wasn’t formally declared a church tradition until the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD.  Lent begins 40 days before Easter (not counting Sundays) on the day the church has traditionally called Ash Wednesday.

There are many questions about Lent. How should we observe this time on the church calendar?  Should we give up something?  (Read: How Should You Observe Lent?)   What is the significance of Ash Wednesday?

We have answered many of these questions. Check out our article listed below, watch our videos, and download the file of 40 Titles.

Prepare for Lent

Begin preparing to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection by observing the 40 days of Lent.  Some might “give something up,” as has been the tradition in some denominations for centuries.  But I suggest that you consider “taking something up.”  Make Lent a time of dedication — dedicating yourself to spending more time reading your Bible, reflecting on God’s teachings and revelation, and in prayer.

40 Days Looking to Jesus – 40 Ways to Know Jesus Better

Make Lent a time of focusing on Jesus.  He is the reason for this season (both the Christmas and Easter seasons).  Think about who Jesus is and all He did during His earthly ministry.  Then reflect upon all that Jesus does for you because you belong to Him.

I suggest that over the next forty days, you consider the titles of Jesus found in His Word.  Here’s a list of 40 titles (there are many more).  Download our chart and reflect upon a title each day leading up to Easter (Remember, the 40 days do not include Sundays.)

Look up the Scripture for each title and ponder in your heart the gracious and generous work of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Do You Know Jesus?

The Bible clearly states that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). It also emphasizes that while the wages of sin is death, God offers us the incredible gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

If you have not yet accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, know that today is the day of salvation (Acts 28). Turn away from your sinful past and turn to Jesus. Remember, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved” (Romans 10:13). Don’t wait—find hope and redemption!
