Who Was Robert Robinson? What’s the Story Behind “Come Thou Fount”

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing was written by Robert Robinson (1735 – 1790). Robinson was a Baptist scholar and hymn writer. His story is an interesting one of a man destined for lawlessness and doom but saved from himself and given a ministry of service as a Christian lecturer and pastor.  Robinson wrote “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” at the age of 22 after converting to Methodism.

In January 1759, Robinson settled in Stone-Yard Baptist Chapel, Cambridge (St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church), where he remained the rest of his life.  He served first as a lecturer and from 1762 as Pastor. The congregation grew to more than a thousand under Robinson’s leadership. Robinson also owned a farm raising cattle and sheep, growing barley and wheat, and dealing as a corn and coal merchant. Robinson died in his sleep on June 9, 1790.
