Voting for elected officials is a privilege.  In many countries, people have no influence on how their country is governed, who their leaders are, and, therefore, the direction of their country.

Civic Responsibility

As U.S. citizens, we are responsible for engaging in the political process of electing a leader.  Our votes matter because it is the way we can be heard.  Elections reveal more than just the candidate chosen by the people. They also reveal a great deal about the people who choose the candidates.

Billy Graham said:

“The secret strength of a nation is found in the faith that abides in the hearts and homes of the country.”

And Proverbs reminds us:

Proverbs 11:11  by the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.

Proverbs 29:2  When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

We must evaluate candidates in the light of God’s Word, for His Word is “a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Heb 4:12). The upright stand for what God says in the Bible.  The wicked stand for themselves, without the Bible as their compass.

To Vote or Not to Vote

Many Christians evaluate a candidate based on what they see in the campaign process.  Understand that what is seen during campaigns is rhetoric purposefully designed to influence people and win their votes.  Empty and unlikely-to-be-fulfilled promises are what campaigns are built on, and projected public personas are driven by PR spin.

That said, we must evaluate each party’s platform.  What do the candidates represent? What policies and platforms most align with the Word of God?  Consider past performance as a predictor of the value of present promises.

We Can’t Do Nothing

In the 2020 election, 25 million registered Christians did not vote, and an additional 15 million were not even registered.  That’s 40 million votes that were never cast!

Edmund Burke, a prominent statesman and philosopher (1729-1797), said, “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

The words of Edmund Burke underscore the importance and duty of voting.  By voting, we actively participate in shaping our country’s future.  We can’t become disenchanted with the electoral process or the candidates and choose not to vote. Voting is a PRIVILEGE and a DUTY.

Remember,by the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed(Proverbs 11:1) AND if the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? (Psa 11:3)

Pray! Stand! Vote!

  • Pray to the Father, asking for guidance in evaluating candidates and understanding issues.
  • Stand firm against all compromise that might negate a faithful witness of God’s Word.
  • Prayerfully make your decision and cast your vote.

Feel honored that you can be a part of directing the future of our county. And trust God that He is sovereign over all candidates and all elections:

Dan 2:21  He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.

Psa 75:7 God is the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another.

Prov 21:1  The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.

Don’t Give Up

As we approach what is said to be the most important election in the history of the United States, don’t give in to apathy or disillusionment.

Trust God, Vote, And Encourage Others to Vote

Psa 33:10 -12 The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations….

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD!
