Please help us share God's truths and hope in Christ.

We’ve covered The Romans Road to Salvation, The John Road to Salvation, and The Revelation Road to Salvation.  Those three “roads” give verses that “lead the way” to justification.

Justification is when a repentant sinner comes to Jesus in faith and is forgiven and declared justified by God. (Read The Gift of Salvation: Justification & Imputation.)   Two verses that speak clearly about our justification are Ephesians 2:8-9.

For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

While those verses explain justification, the next verse describes the life-long journey of sanctification that begins the moment we are saved:

Ephesians 2:10  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Note that verses 9 and 10 say we were saved by the grace of God, not BY good works. Also, note that verse 10 says we are saved TO good works, that is, to do good works.  Remember this:  God doesn’t need our good works…but our neighbor does.

Sanctification

When we are saved, we begin the journey of growing in holiness and being conformed by the Spirit to the image of Jesus (Read: What you need to know about Sanctification & Glorification).  In that journey, we are called to do good works that glorify the Lord and bless others.

All Christians are on the sanctification road to our ultimate destination—Heaven. Remember, in our journey, we are never alone. Jesus has promised, “I will never leave or forsake you” (Heb 13:5), and He has given us the Holy Spirit to indwell us, teach us, and guide us.

The Romans 12 Road to Sanctification

The apostle Paul has given us the “roadmap” for the sanctification road.  These verses point the way, helping us focus on the end of the road.

God’s mercy and grace in saving us should lead us to worship God in sacrifice and service.

Rom 12:1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Our worship, sacrifice, and service are to be in humility and sober self-assessment.

Rom 12:3  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

The gifts of our inheritance, which God gives, are for service to Him and others.

Rom 12:6  Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them…

How, Then, Shall We Live?

Be Loving

Rom 12:10  Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;

Work Hard

Rom 12:11  not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;

Have Hope, Be Patient & Pray

Rom 12:12  rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;

Be Humble

Rom 12:16  … Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Be Forgiving

Rom 12:19  Beloved, do not avenge yourselves…

Be a Peacemaker

Rom 12:18  If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

Show Love and Grace

Rom 12:21  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

    As we walk worthy of our calling on the sanctification road, we will “not be conformed to this world, but [will] be transformed by the renewing of [our] mind[s].”  And with minds renewed in God’s Word, we will be able to “prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Rom 12:2)

    Furthermore, the Holy Spirit will empower us to share the reason for our hope (1 Peter 3:15) with a lost and dying world.
