Hope for Today: A Daily Devotion from Reasons for Hope*Jesus
“How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever?” Psalm 13:1
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget — yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.” Isaiah 49:15-16
“I will not leave you orphans.” John 14:18
Were all our sins and afflictions so soon to be prayed away with a few words, whence these sad and repeated complaints of David? Why should God advise us to wait for Him and to persevere in hope? And how could faith and patience be exercised?
In our closets, we may be lifted up with high speculations, and seem to be strong, and able to leap over all the walls. But in great distress, we see how dejected and distrusting our hearts often are (Psalm 30:7-8). But faith is the true confidence, and weakness the surest claim to strength. For the Lord preserves us. He is our strength and our shield.
My soul, seek the assurance of the Lord’s love. And having obtained this, remember, Jesus never forsakes or forgets His own. We often turn from Him, but He never turns from us. He is faithful, though we are fickle. Yes, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”
Precious Lord Jesus, help me to rejoice in Your unchangeable love amidst all the changes that I experience below!
