Love like Jesus! How do we do that?
We all know that during His earthly ministry, Jesus gave two commandments: 1) Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and 2) love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:30, Luke 10:27).
In the same way that Jesus elevated the Mosaic Law (Matt 5-7), He also elevated the second of the two great commandments.
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are My disciples, if you have love one for another.
In the upper room, on the night in which He was betrayed, Jesus taught His disciples by example how to love others, and He commanded His disciples to “love one another, as I have loved you…”
As disciples of Jesus, we are to love all people. And it begins with our brothers and sisters-in-Christ:
Gal 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
It was important to Jesus that there be love and unity among His disciples. They were not to love each other as their neighbor, but rather to love each other as He loved them. In the upper room, Jesus humbled Himself and gave them a beautiful example of that kind of love — He served them by washing their feet.
When we love like Jesus loves, we humbly serve others (John 13:15), we reflect the love we have already received (1 John 4:19), and we show the world that we belong to Jesus (John 13:35).
