In July 2014, an online research site, YouGov.com [1],  posted the results of their “What Would Jesus Do?” poll.

Not surprisingly, the results showed that Americans are more liberal on social issues than they think Jesus would be.  What is surprising in these poll results is how liberal (and unbiblical) they think Jesus would be.

It’s apparent on these issues that those polled do not know Jesus very well. Nor do they know the Bible’s teachings.  Some of these issues are clearly addressed in God’s Word, others are not.  However,  all of the poll results indicate reasoning based on personal opinion.

The question itself, “Do you think Jesus would support or oppose the following items [social issues]? is wrongly asked.  It doesn’t matter what we “think.”  What matters is what the Bible says.  We should never be comfortable saying what Jesus would do unless we can support it with Scripture.

We should not think…“What would Jesus do.”  Instead, we should consider, “What did Jesus do.”  God has been gracious in giving us the Holy Bible to instruct us (2 Timothy 3:16) and the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us in all things (John 14:26).  Avail yourself of the wisdom of His Word and the power of His Spirit so you can reason together with Lord (Isaiah 1:18).

The Credibility of the Poll?

YouGov.com does not supply any information on the sample group regarding size, demographics, etc. (they do, however, break down the results between Protestants and Catholics).  Because we are not informed about the sample group, there is reason to wonder how accurate the poll was in measuring American’s reasoning nationwide. I do, however, believe that the results are an indication of the secular worldview that is so prevalent in our nation.  Many don’t know what the Bible says, but they are often quick to say what they think it says.

I share these charts with you as a reminder that it is important to know what the Bible teaches…and most importantly, to know the Person the Bible teaches about — His character, His will, His ways, and His great love for you!

Conclusion

These poll results remind us that what we choose to shape our opinions will influence how we discern social issues.  What we think can come from the world, the nightly news, other people, etc.  Or…it can come from the Word of God.  Which one will you choose?

Here’s another poll to consider.  Research conducted with over 120,000 people worldwide has revealed that those who engage in Scripture 4+ days per week grow spiritually and display healthy behaviors versus those who read Scripture 3 or fewer times per week. It is found they display little or no difference in behavior than people “of the world.” (www.centerforbibleengagement.org)

Remember to read your Bible daily….

For the LORD gives wisdom: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs 2:6)
