As God searches the heart and tries the reins, He cannot be deceived by outward form. We ought no, therefore,e to deceive ourselves in this particular. It is no certain proof of a real conversion to God if we renounce merely the grosser sins of our former lives, much less if we abstain from such things only as by nature we are not so much inclined to indulge. But, if our hearts are so renewed by the grace of the Holy Spirit as to be firmly and habitually opposed to our most beloved lusts, we have a good evidence of a real conversion.

The Lord and all His upright followers attack first, and with the greatest ardor, these inward enemies. But if we would thus effectually prosecute the holy war, we must look with an unwearied eye to the Captain of our salvation, believing that He is both able and willing to support us and to ensure complete and everlasting triumph.

Lord, make me upright! May I stand before God, just in Jesus; and walk before men, in sincerity and simplicity. Keep me from duplicity and every species of hypocrisy. To that end, give me a rooted hatred to all sin, steady faith in the word and work of Jesus, and habitual concern for Your glory and praise.
