Summary

Ecclesiastes reveals the emptiness of life without God, prompting us to question the meaning of our lives, and causing us to cry out, “Is this all there is?”

C.S. Lewis articulated that deep down, we desire something beyond what this world offers, as even the best experiences—like love, travel, and careers—often leave us unfulfilled. He concluded that desires unmet by worldly experiences suggest we were made for another world.

Life offers much beauty and joy, from relationships to nature, but relying on these earthly pleasures for ultimate fulfillment leads to disappointment. When we expect things like love, travel, or career success to provide lasting meaning, we eventually find that the excitement fades and colors dull.

Key Points

  1. Divine Purpose: Life is ultimately meaningless without a relationship with God, as emphasized in Ecclesiastes.
  2. Self-Examination: We are encouraged to deeply reflect on our lives and the meaning behind our pursuits.
  3. Unfulfilled Longings*: C.S. Lewis points out that human desires often exceed what this world can provide, indicating a longing for something greater.
  4. Limitations of Experiences: Love, travel, and achievement cannot fully satisfy our deepest desires or offer lasting fulfillment.
  5. Indicators of Our Origin: The existence of unfulfilled longings suggests that we were made for a different, divine existence.
  6. Joy in Life’s Gifts: Despite the world’s brokenness, there is much to enjoy, such as love, laughter, and nature.
  7. Transcendent Moments: Moments of joy serve as signals that can uplift our spirits and provide hope.
  8. Warning About Idolatry: Depending on worldly things—like romance or career success—can lead to disappointment and unmet expectations.
  9. Fleeting Satisfaction: Relying on earthly experiences for ultimate meaning can result in a diminishing sense of fulfillment over time.
  10. Seeking True Meaning: Genuine satisfaction and meaning in life are found through a relationship with God, rather than in temporary pleasures.

Do You Know Jesus?

The Bible clearly states that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). It also emphasizes that while the wages of sin is death, God offers us the incredible gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

If you have not yet accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, know that today is the day of salvation (Acts 28). Turn away from your sinful past and turn to Jesus. Remember, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved” (Romans 10:13). Don’t wait—find hope and redemption!
