POH12-26

By Shari Abbott, Reasons for Hope* Jesus

In our last Got Questions we answered, “How did Jesus become a man?”

The question “why did Jesus become a man?” is correctly answered with God’s purpose and plan of redemption.  God sent Jesus to accomplish His mission of rescuing us.  Jesus came and lived a sinless human life and died a painful human death; and He did it for sinful man, opening the way to forgiveness and eternal life.

With Christmas having just passed, let’s take a minute to reflect upon the miracle of the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ and understand another reason why God entered into our world.

God with Us

Isaiah prophesied it:

Isaiah 7:14  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew penned it:

Matthew 1:23  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

John proclaimed it:

John 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

God took on human flesh and became a man so we could better know Him.  The incarnation was a revelation to man of the righteousness of God.  God had in many ways given mankind an understanding of His righteousness but with the incarnation man could now see the righteousness of God in the person of Jesus Christ.

In the Garden, Adam and Eve saw and knew the righteousness of God.  They were in perfect harmony with Him. They walked with God and knew Him in a way that we cannot begin to understand. God dwelt with them and they shared an intimacy that is beyond our imagination. But that communion was broken by sin and God no longer dwelt with man.

In His mercy and kindness, immediately when man sinned God began revealing His plan of redemption (Genesis 3:15).

He chose Abraham, and from him created a nation of chosen people and the revelation of God increased. But when God came to earth and became man, He more fully revealed Himself in a way that man could truly understand….He became one of us. He humbled Himself and entered into our time dimension and took on  human form so that man might once again more intimately know Him.

What a great gift, the revelation of God in the God/man Jesus Christ. Once again God walked with man in His creation.

After Jesus completed His earthly mission, God continued to reveal Himself to man through chosen apostles and through His written Word. Today, we find our clearest revelation of God in His Word, the Holy Bible, and it is now our mission to reveal Him to a lost and dying world.

One day God will will return in glory and His revelation will be complete.  He will cleanse the earth, and once again dwell with man.

Give thanks to God for His kind gift of revelation to us — by sending Jesus to dwell with man, for all the faithful witnesses who have gone before us, and of course for the Holy Bible in which the God of the universe is so clearly revealed in our day.

Join in praise and thanksgiving with Charles Wesley who wrote these words:

Christ by highest heaven adored;

Christ, the everlasting Lord!

Late in time behold Him come,

offspring of the Virgin’s womb.

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

hail the incarnate Deity,

Pleased as man with men to dwell,

Jesus our Emmanuel.
