Some Christians say that the theory of intelligent design (also called “ID”) points to God.  They claim intelligent design is actually an argument for God’s creation of all things. Some even believe that it proves evolution to be false. However, that’s not really the case.

Intelligent design theory focuses on the apparent order in the universe and thereby suggests that there had to have been an intelligent designer.  Suggesting that the universe could not have come about by random process (as evolution teaches), and exposing errors in Darwinistic evolution, the theory does not effectively refute evolution. Nor does it reveal the God of all creation. Intelligent Design does not give clearly articulated reasoning for how all things were created, or by whom.

Intelligent, Incredible Design

Unlike theorists of intelligent design and evolution, Christians are able to explain how all things were created. With sound and supported reasoning, we can answer all the “W” questions: Who? What? When? Where? and Why?

Who Created?

“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth” (Gen 1:1). From Genesis to Revelation, and by that which we observe in the world, we can understand the incredible power and intelligence of our Creator.

What was Created?

The simple answer is everything…except God.

In the beginning, God existed!  Angels were created. The universe was created.  The earth was created. And all living creatures were created.  Even evolutionists and ID theorists would agree that the universe and the earth were created.  They just won’t entertain the thought of an eternal God who always existed or an angelic realm.  The theories of evolution and intelligent design are actually only hypotheses. They have no observable, measurable evidence to support being theories.  They are based on using the observable world to conjecture how it came to be.

When Were All Things Created?

Evolutionists speculate millions of years ago. But they use faulty scientific methods for support.  No human was there when the world was created.  However, the only One who was there has given us His words in a book.  And His record of creation events tells that creation took place about six thousand years ago.

Where Were All Things Created?

This requires a refinement of the question. First, from where were all things created?  God is everywhere and so pinpointing a “from where” God did His creative work is impossible.  Next, the “where,” in reference to location, of all created things?  The location of things God created is definable.  Just look around.  Look up to the heavens. Look around at the earth. The heavens and the earth, and all that is in them, are observable and measurable— at least to some extent.

Why Were All Things Created?

Evolution and ID theorists have a problem answering this. Without a belief in God and trust in His revealed Word, there really isn’t any answer.  To give an answer to the “why” for creation, there must be a Creator who had a purpose and a plan and has revealed it.  Evolutionists deny that and many ID theorists don’t know the Creator (although some who “buy into” ID do identify God as the Creator).

So how do Christians answer, “why were all things created?”  God tells us in His Word that all things were created for His glory–to magnify Himself through that which He created.

In the universe, we see His creative, intelligent, and incredible design.  In Psalm 19:1, 2-4, we are told “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork…. the heavens “speak” and reveal knowledge that all might understand.

So the earth was created as an inhabitable planet to support plant, animal, and human life.  While plants and animals are incredible life forms, mankind is the crowning glory of God’s creation.  Why? Because only mankind was created in the image of God.

So “why were all things created?”  God tells us…

Isaiah 43:7  Even every one that is called by My name: for I have created him for My glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

Eph 1:5  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

Rev 4:11  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.

There’s One More Question — How?

How were all things created?  The answer: we don’t know.  So let’s look to the heavens, and echo the words of the prophet Ezekiel and say, “Oh Lord God, Thou knowest.” (Eze 37:3).

Focusing on the Most Important Questions

What? When? Where? Why? and How? are all very important and intriguing questions. But the most important question is Who?  It is the answer to the “who” question that opens an understanding to all the others.

Intelligent, Incredible, Immanuel Design

What? When? Where? Why? and How? all reveal things about the Creator — His incredible power and intelligence, and His majestic and perfect plan and purpose.  But the answer to the “who” question reveals the Person of the Creator — Immanuel, God with us.  Just as the heavens declare His glory (Ps 19:1), so also should we:

Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead…

Col 1:16  For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible… all things were created by him, and for Him.

Romans 11:36 For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.

So What About Intelligent Design?

As Christians, we don’t affirm Intelligent Design. We believe and proclaim Immanuel’s Design.

Psa 96:3  Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.

One Final Thought

Our commission is not to debate evolution or to dispute Intelligent Design. There’s nothing wrong with sharing information about God as Creator, but we are not commissioned to argue the facts of biblical creation.

Our commission is clear and simple: Be ready always to give a reason for your Hope (1 Pet 3:15).  Share Jesus with all people and tell everyone about the gift of salvation that He offers to all. In “seeing” Jesus, coming to faith in Him, and being saved by Him, people will come to know the one true Creator and biblical creation will be seen and understood.
