Hope for Today: A Daily Devotion from Reasons for Hope*Jesus
“Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.” 2 Corinthians 7:10
There is a sorrow that is called godly, because it is produced in us by the Spirit of God revealing the evil of sin and the plague and corruption of our own hearts, and deeply humbling us under a sense of sin — producing evangelical repentance and leading the soul to cry to the Lord Jesus Christ for pardon and salvation; the Holy Spirit, at the same time, enabling us to believe in Him and to rest upon His person, blood, and righteousness, for redemption and salvation. This repentance will never be repented of.
But sorrow arising from the love of this world works death — death eternal.
Lord Jesus, grant me to feel more of this godly sorrow for sin and to rejoice more in You as my Savior.
Reader, would you realize this godly sorrow for sin? Go to Gethsemane and Calvary — exercise your thoughts on a bleeding, dying Savior, and pray the Holy Spirit to sprinkle His precious blood on your conscience. This will break your heart, cause your tears to flow, and set your whole soul against sin forever.
