Fanny Crosby is not remembered for sermons or theological treatises.  But just as the words of the great writers live on, the words of this great hymn writer have survived the test of time. Blind from infancy, Fanny Crosby wrote more than 9,000 hymns, including “Blessed Assurance,” a song that reminds us of the security we have in Jesus. She penned the lyrics in 1873  and Phoebe Knapp wrote the music that same year. Other popular songs that we still sing today are “All the Way My Savior Leads Me,” “To God Be the Glory,” and “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross.”  Fanny Crosby’s blindness did not define her or cause despair or bitterness. When she was eight years old, she penned these words: Oh, what a happy soul I am, although I cannot see! I am resolved that in this world, Contented I will be.

Her Words Live On

Know as the “Queen of Gospel Song Writers” and as the “Mother of modern congregational singing in America”, some of her best-known hymns include  “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour,” “Blessed Assurance,” “Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home,” “Praise Him, Praise Him,” “Rescue the Perishing,” and “To God Be the Glory”.

Words of Wisdom from Fanny Crosby

  • If I had a choice, I would still choose to remain blind. Because when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior.
  • It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered to me tomorrow, I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.
  • It is not enough to have a song on your lips. You must also have a song in your heart.
  • Oh what a happy soul am I although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world contented I shall be. How many blessings I enjoy that other people don’t. To weep and sigh, because I’m blind? I cannot and I won’t.
  • Take the wold, but give me Jesus; In His cross, my trust shall be;  Till, with clearer, brighter vision; Face-to-face my Lord I see.
  • Sometimes I need to reject the music proposed for my songs because the musicians misunderstand that the Fanny Crosby who once wrote for the people in the saloons has merely changed the lyrics. Oh my no. The church must never sing its songs to the melodies of the world.
  • Redeemed how I love to proclaim it. Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. Redeemed thru His infinite mercy His child and forever I am.
  • We are traveling on with our staff in hand… We are pilgrims bound for the heavenly land.
  • Chords that were broken will vibrate once more.
  • Can ye fathom the ocean, dark and deep, where the mighty waves and the grandeur sweep?
  • The angel of mercy, the child of love, together had flown to the realms above

Words of Wisdom from the Cloud of Witnesses:  "Cloud of Witnesses" refers to those in Heaven who have run their races and are now with the Lord. Their words of wisdom are filled with faith, hope, love, and joy that warm our souls. Their words present the eternal truths of God that grow us and give us joy. And their words strengthen our souls, equip our minds, encourage our hearts, and empower us to stand firm in our faith and be motivated, ready, and willing to share the hope we have in Jesus.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith...(Hebrews 12:1-2)

    Do You Know Jesus?

The Bible clearly states that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). It also emphasizes that while the wages of sin is death, God offers us the incredible gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

If you have not yet accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, know that today is the day of salvation (Acts 28). Turn away from your sinful past and turn to Jesus. Remember, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved” (Romans 10:13). Don’t wait—find hope and redemption!
