What is The Serenity Prayer?

The Serenity Prayer asks God for serenity to accept circumstances that can’t be changed, courage to change those that are within our ability to do so, and wisdom to know and discern between those that can and cannot be changed.

The prayer, in the form most commonly quoted, was written by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971) and was first included in one of his sermons in 1943. His colleague Winnifred Crane Wygal quoted it in March 1933 and attributed it to Niebuhr in a book he published in 1940.

Over the years, the prayer has been featured on greeting cards and giftware. It has also been used by many addiction recovery programs with additional verses added to the serenity, courage, and wisdom petition.

The prayer is simple, thought-provoking, God-honoring, and beneficial for remembering God’s presence with us to help us in all of life’s circumstances and His promises to us of a glorious life yet to come.
