“Do not be conformed to this world.” Romans 12:2
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him…. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15, 17
Reader, whose will do you do? Examine yourself. Perhaps you think that to love the world and do its will cannot be a great sin because many reputed honest men and Christians do the same. No — but for your soul’s sake, consider what the Scripture says, “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Without this love of the Father, you have no faith.
Consider further whether you do not love the world above either God or your own soul:
- Have you not more than a hundred thoughts about the world for one of God or of your soul?
- Do you not talk a hundred times more about the world than about God or your soul?
- Is not your pursuit continually after the world, to the neglect of God and your soul?
If so, the world is your idol; you love not God and are murdering your own soul. Alas, what a piteous case you are in!
The Lord have mercy on you! Holy Spirit, convince us of our true state and condition before God; if it is right, confirm us in it; if it is wrong, convert us from it!
