O Lord, this world is nothing to me but a wilderness, a place of tribulation, where being tossed to and fro, I enjoy no rest. But when I lift up my heart and look for peace in You, I am supported and comforted. Grant that I may thus be strengthened for the time to come, whenever I am at a loss what course to take. Let me always firmly believe You to be a present help in trouble, who is able and willing to bear me up under all outward distresses until I shall safely arrive at the rest appointed for the people of God. And give me the fortitude to endure whatever You shall bring upon me, and to improve all the trying dispensations of Your providence. Often allure me from the world into secret fellowship with Yourself, and speak words of comfort and peace to my troubled heart. Let my visits to You be frequent, sensible, and refreshing, like the visits of the wearied and exhausted tradesman, leaving the town to visit the object of his love in his quiet and beautiful country residence. Amen.
