Are you a people-pleaser? Many people live for the approval of others. They try to please their family, friends, and acquaintances, thinking it will bring acceptance, harmony, and peace to their relationships.
Others live for God’s approval. They believe that they MUST please God to have His blessings and peace. They define pleasing God as living in obedience to His will and ways, i.e., doing all that He commands. While that is the way we should strive to live, we all fail at it and, therefore, pleasing God by our righteous living is impossible.
The Book of Hebrews clearly tells what is necessary to please God — FAITH!
Hebrews 11:6 Without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Only by faith can we please God. What He desires is our trust and dependence on Him alone. He is already pleased with us because of what Jesus has done and because of who we are in Christ.
Jesus lived the life we cannot live. He died the death that we should die, and He paid the penalty for our sins. When we came to Him in believing and trusting faith, He washed us clean in His blood, imputed His righteousness to our accounts, and gave us the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us. Therefore, we are forever free from living FOR approval and acceptance because we are already approved and accepted and empowered to live in faith. Therefore, we can live FROM forgiveness, acceptance, approval, and so much more. In doing so, we exercise faith and, thereby, please God.
Instead of Living FOR, We Live FROM
- You don’t live for forgiveness. You live from forgiveness — the forgiveness of Christ you already have (Eph 1:7, 4:32)
- You don’t live for acceptance. You live from acceptance — the adoption into God’s family. (Eph 1:6, Rom 8:15-17)
- You don’t live for eternal life. You live from the gift of eternal life you already have. (John 10:28, 17:7)
- You don’t live for righteousness — you live from righteousness — the imputed righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Cor 5:21)
- You don’t live for love. You live from love — the love of God for you. (Rom 5:8, Eph 2:4)
- You don’t live for joy. You live from joy — the joy of your salvation that fills your soul. (John 15:11, Rom 5:11, 14:17, 15:13)
- You don’t live for peace. You live from peace — the peace with God that comforts your heart. (Rom 5:1)
- You don’t live for faith. You live from faith — the faith that God grows in your knowledge of Him. (Rom 1:17, Gal 3:11, Heb 10:38)
- You don’t live for hope. You live from hope — the hope that is certain because God’s promises are true. (Rom 1:17, Rom 15:4, Col 1:5, Col 1:27, 2 Th 2:16, 1 Tim 1:1, 1 Pet 1:3)
- You don’t live for power. You live from power — the power of the Holy Spirit, who teaches and guides you. (Zec 4:6, Rom 15:13, 1 Th 1:5, 2 Tim 1:7)
- You don’t live for victory. You live from victory — the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 15:57, Rom 8:37)
