From the book of Proverbs,

  • “My son, if you will receive my sayings, and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasure; then you will discern the fear of the LORD, and discover the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:1-6 – NASB)

Ah yes, to the young, to our youth, “wisdom” speaks from the holy Scriptures. It says to them, “if you will receive my sayings,” the words I put forth, and if you will “treasure my commandments within you,” you will “make your ear attentive to wisdom,” to true “wisdom,” you will “incline your heart to understanding.” Further, “If you cry for discernment” and “lift your voice for understanding,” seeking these things as “silver” and “treasure,” well, “then you will discern the fear of the LORD;” and this is necessary for life!

The word “fear” is the Hebrew word Yirah. It has a broad scope of meanings; “fear, terror, reverence, awe, piety, religion.” Zodhiates writes of the word, “If one truly recognizes God as all-powerful, this will be reflected in his attitude and daily life in the form of reverence.” Reverence for God acknowledges Him in life, and a true “knowledge” certainly causes one to “fear,” to, if you would, tremble and be in awe of the All Mighty! Life then becomes lived out in a sphere of “wisdom,” and “understanding,” and “discernment, and of “knowledge.” And each one of these are a “treasure” that “wisdom” cries out we should “seek” as if it were “silver.”

What is the result when the goal of “wisdom” is achieved? One “discover(s) the knowledge of God” and thus, “you will discern the fear of the LORD.” Take note of what our youth are being taught in this day in which you and I live. Take note that according to the Scriptures, if they are not learning “the fear of the LORD,” if they are not being instructed to “discover the knowledge of God,” then they will lack “wisdom,” they will lack necessary “understanding,” they will be lacking in vital “discernment” that leads to knowing who they are and why they are here and how they are to live.

We look around us at the youth of our day and we witness a lack of reverence for God. The result of this becomes evident as we witness a decline in morals, a lack of discipline, a strong narcissistic attitude. Our society has been lulled to sleep by Satan, his anti-God agenda being readily received by our generation, and thus the goal of wisdom is being thwarted. It is essential that we not forget nor allow our youth to miss the vital “understanding” that, “the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Deep concern for our children’s learning, for our grandchildren’s learning, for the learning of all young people, should mark each one of us. Our nation is failing to steer them to the Word of God and such the goal of wisdom is sadly not being achieved. One must note that the end-result of a society that lacks Godly “wisdom,” that lacks the “fear” of God, has no favorable outcome.

Have a good day brethren . . . and as you walk do all you can to be an earthen vessel that conveys to our youth, the treasure of the
instruction of God’s Word.
