By Wade Wacker, Reasons for Hope* Jesus
This is one of the greatest lines in movie history, spoken by Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. In today’s world, oh, how true it is.
Recently, a California State University of Northridge scientist discovered a triceratops horn which he believed to be the largest ever found. Upon examination of the horn the scientist, Mark Armitage, was fascinated to find soft tissue on the sample. This stunned members of the school’s biology department “because it indicated dinosaurs roamed the earth only thousands of years in the past rather than going extinct 60 million years ago.” This validates Creationists’ position of a young earth and when God said a day, He meant a day.
Shortly after Armitage’s findings were published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, he was fired. Although, Armitage was a published scientist of over 30 years, the university claimed a “lack of funding” for his position. Obviously, Mr. Armitage’s findings caused a stir at the university and the firing had much more to it than “lack of funding.” California State University of Northridge could not handle the Truth.
This story represents the ever increasing battle between God’s Word and the “educated” word. Much of the academia world cannot handle any evidence that validates the Bible; in their eyes the Bible is a book of fairy tales and has no scientific value. They will not accept the fact that it is the spoken Word of God, and EVERY part of it is fact.
Yes, it is nice that evidence has been found to verify what we Christians know to be true already. However, the scary part of this story is the ends the devil will go to in order to fight the truth. Science is about discovery, and when discoveries are made and thesis given, it should be embraced; unless, it comes to validating the spoken Word of God. Instead, in our world today, any science that validates the Word of God is attacked. The devil is on a full-fledged attack in the academia world against any science that confirms the Word. It is amazing to see the ends people will go to in order to hide the Truth. A scientist gets fired over a peer-reviewed article. Really!!? If the shoe was on the other foot, and the evidence came across as millions of years, it’s highly unlikely the scientist would have been fired. In fact, he would have been revered.
Even though we Christians get appalled by reading something like this, it should come as no surprise. Paul wrote about this in Romans 1:22 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools and also in 1 Corinthians 3:18-23 18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. 23 And you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
The people in our society, who are perceived to be wise, in reality, truly cannot handle the Truth. That is why it is unacceptable when their truth is interrupted by the Truth.
It is very easy to get frustrated and even angry when reading or even experiencing this type of persecution against Christianity. It is becoming more and more prevalent in our society. Many times the reaction is to come out swinging. We must be bold and committed to our answers, but also remember to give them with meekness and fear. Jesus and His manner of handling the Pharisees is a perfect example of that. His knowledge of the Old Testament allowed him to give answers to the many traps the Pharisees tried to set. We must embrace that position of knowledge and be ready to give answers to the people who attack us.
Finally, our Lord will ultimately have the final say and for those who reject His Truth…that is in His hands, not ours.
Right now, it is our job to pray for those who reject His truth and share the gospel with them. If they don’t know Jesus, they can’t know His truth. It is foolishness to them.
1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Pray that God will shine His light into their darkness and give them the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6)
