In Genesis 2:4 it switches from simply “God,” as used repeatedly in Genesis 1, to LORD God.
Gen 2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
Why the addition of LORD to identify God? The answer is really quite simple. It’s to reveal more about God. The Bible is a book of progressive revelation and as the Bible progressively reveals more about God we learn more about Him and come to know Him better.
In Genesis 1, we read about God (Elohim – the Mighty God) who created everything — the earth, moon, and stars and all living creatures, including man.
In Genesis 2 we are given more insights into that creation and more information about our Creator. God is the Creator of man in Genesis 1 and the Communicator with man in Genesis 2. The Hebrew word Yehovah, which is translated “LORD,” is added in verse 4 as the passage recounts all that the Lord God had done in creation (verses 4-15) and then records God’s first words of communication to man, Adam, in verses 16-18.
In Genesis 2:16-17 and in Genesis 3:16-19, we see God as the Covenant Maker. From just the first three chapters of Genesis we are given revelation (knowledge) of our Creator God (Gen 1), our Communicator God (Gen 2) and also our Covenant Making God (Gen 2 and 3).
And the revelation of the Person and works of the LORD God continues throughout the rest of the biblical record.
