As to we who have professed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the apostle Paul writes to us what to do in the day,

  • “. . . continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast” (Colossians 1:23 – NASB)

I believe in the perseverance of the saints! Persevering, meaning “to persist in pursuing something in spite of obstacles or opposition.” To “continue in the faith” is the mark of the true believer. First John is a book of true faith . . . a book about believers who “abide, remain, practice continually” the faith . . . they “persist in pursing” the Christian faith “in spite of obstacles or opposition.”

It is to be remembered that not only is a Christian declared righteous (Romans 4:11) but he or she is a new creation of God (II Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:10), enabled by God to love God, hate sin, know the truth, desire obedience . . . empowered by the Spirit to persevere in these things.

True believers will not defect! They are enabled by God to persevere, and the apostle Paul was confident of this,

  • “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus”(Philippians 1:6 – NASB)

Be assured of this and “firmly established and steadfast” in your assurance, as you “continue in the faith.”

  • “So then my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”(Philippians 2:12-13 – NASB)

May we realize that “God . . . is at work in (us), both to will and work for His good pleasure,” and that we the redeemed, the sons of God, are called to perseverance, called to “work(ing) out (our) salvation with fear and trembling,” being in the Word and of the Word that we might “continue in the faith firmly established,” holding “steadfastly” to the doctrines of historic Christianity that we have been entrusted with.

Have a good day brethren . . . and as you walk do so as one who perseveres in the faith, firmly established and steadfast.
