Please help us share God's truths and hope in Christ.

Memorial Day is a day for remembering those who died serving their country in military service.  It began after the American Civil War to honor Union and Confederate soldiers who had died, and by the twentieth century, the day had come to honor all fallen servicemen and servicewomen.

Memorial Day also is the unofficial but widely accepted start of summer.  With schools dismissing for summer and the days becoming warmer and warmer,  Memorial Day is often a celebration of looking forward to “fun in the sun” and the “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.”

It’s always wonderful to gather with friends and family to celebrate good times and the start of warmer weather and fun outdoor activities, but on Memorial Day, take time to pause and REMEMBER.  Make it a day of three-fold remembering:

Remembrance #1

REMEMBER all those who have given their lives that we might live in a free country.  We must never forget them.  Freedom comes at a great cost, and we should thank God for their sacrifice.  Jesus said: “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).  Remember their sacrifice.

Remembrance #2

REMEMBER all those who gave their lives in faithful service and witness for the Lord Jesus Christ.  We must never forget them.  Standing for Truth has never been more important, and many have been persecuted for it, and many will be.

Jesus told us that “In the world, you shall have tribulation…” (John 16:33), and Paul reminded us that “….all who will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Tim 3:12).

We have brothers and sisters in Christ who are being severely persecuted, even killed, for their faith.  Remember them and be inspired by their witness to stand strong and faithful for Jesus.  Remember also that Jesus promised us, “…I have overcome the world” (John 16:33), and Paul reminded us:

Romans 8:35-39  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Pray daily for our brothers and sisters-in-Christ who are being persecuted for their faith, and thank God for their faithful testimony.

Remember those who have been killed for their faith and give thanks to God for His receiving them into the company of all the saints in Heaven.

Remembrance #3

Finally, and most importantly, REMEMBER THE LORD.  On this Memorial Day and every day throughout the year, thank the Lord for His sacrifice.  He gave His life to pay our debt, and has given us abundant life and the gift of His Holy Spirit.  We must always remember His sacrifice and never forget His benefits.  David reminds us of this in Psalm 103.

Psalm 103:1-7   Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!  Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagles.  The LORD executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed…..

103:11-12  For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;  As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us….

103:20 Bless the LORD, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word.
103:21 Bless the LORD, all you His hosts, You ministers of His, who do His pleasure.
103:22
Bless the LORD, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul!

Remember those who gave their lives for our country and those who gave their lives in faithfulness to Jesus. Remember and pray for those who are persecuted for His name’s sake.  And most importantly, remember the Lord and find rest in His sufficient grace.
